Adam & Marie-Line | Cleveland Dam engagement

23 April 2019

by Mark Burnham

It's been a few years since I last worked with Marie-Line.

In 2013 I was the Photo Editor for SFU's student newspaper while she was playing for the women's basketball team. The sports section was doing a piece on her that week and needed an image to go along with the article. I wanted something dark and dramatic, the chilly parking garage just outside of the paper's office being the perfect location. The paper's staff loved the picture and we ended up using it for the cover in the following week's edition.

These athlete shoots were always a favourite of mine, and I met a ton of great people though them.

But I never got to meet Adam, who was playing football for SFU when him and Marie-Line met.

Fast forward a few years, Adam and Marie-Line are now engaged!

With their history and love of sports, it seemed natural to try and include their athletics careers into the engagement session, maybe bringing along basketball and football equipment or old SFU momentos. We were both afraid of things becoming cheesy and unnatural quickly, so in the end we just kept it simple.

We headed up to North Van for the afternoon and explored the trails together, chasing pockets of light, stumbling over exposed river rocks, and just enjoying ourselves in what felt like the first true spring day.

Along the way we started catching up, chatting about our times at SFU, what we've done since then and their history together. Incredibly, I found out that the first time Adam saw Marie-Line was actually the photograph from our shoot on the cover of the newspaper. He thought it was cool and recognized her when they finally met. The power of the photograph!

Really looking forward to their wedding next month.

Should be a ton of familiar SFU faces as well!
